Lecong: furniture by the kilometre

Lecong's furniture malls stretch for kilometres and the factories sit behind them. A buyer can see 30 sofas before lunch and still argue about foam density after it. We start with the factory that matches your price band, then use the malls to compare finish and packaging.

Nanzhuang and the tile kilns

Foshan is China's ceramic capital. Tiles, sanitaryware and mosaics cluster in Nanzhuang and Xiqiao, and the kilns run around the clock. The first question is not the price per square metre; it is the firing batch, the water absorption and the packing loss on a container.

Guzhen: the lighting town

Thirty minutes from Foshan, Guzhen is a lighting town with showrooms on every street. Most of the factories are small, and most of the designs are copies. We look at the driver, the heat sink and the certification, because those three decide whether the lamp survives its first winter.

Ancestors, dim sum, one afternoon

Foshan is the home of Cantonese opera, Ip Man and Wong Fei-hung. The ancestral temple in the old town is worth two hours. Most buyers give it a miss, which is a mistake: a slow afternoon in Lingnan heat is part of understanding the city you are buying from.
